Tax audit in Chennai

A tax audit is an audit of the books of account of a business or profession by a Chartered Accountant, required by income tax law when turnover or gross receipts cross set limits or when lower presumptive income is declared. The auditor reports in the prescribed form whether the books are properly kept and gives detailed particulars required by the Income Tax Department. The CA office in Adyar, Chennai, carries out tax audits and files the audit report.

Frequently asked questions

What turnover makes a tax audit compulsory for a business?

Under the earlier section 44AB, a business needed a tax audit if turnover exceeded Rs 1 crore, or Rs 10 crore where cash receipts and cash payments were each not more than 5 percent of the total. Commentary says these limits continue in section 63 of the 2025 Act; confirm before relying on it.

Do professionals such as doctors need a tax audit?

A person carrying on a profession needed a tax audit under the earlier law if gross receipts exceeded Rs 50 lakh in the year. Professionals using the presumptive scheme who declare income below the presumptive rate, and whose income is above the exemption limit, may also need an audit.

Is a tax audit needed if I opt for presumptive taxation?

If you declare income at or above the presumptive rate under the scheme for small businesses or professionals, a tax audit is usually not required. If you declare a lower income and your total income exceeds the basic exemption limit, a tax audit can be required. The answer depends on facts for each year.

What is the penalty for not getting a tax audit done?

Under the earlier law, failure to get accounts audited or to furnish the audit report in time could attract a penalty of 0.5 percent of turnover or gross receipts, limited to Rs 1.5 lakh, unless there was reasonable cause. Check the corresponding provision in the Income-tax Act, 2025.

Who signs the tax audit report?

The tax audit report is signed by a Chartered Accountant in practice who is not disqualified, such as being an employee or relative of the taxpayer. It is uploaded on the income tax portal by the Chartered Accountant and must then be accepted by the taxpayer from their own login before the due date.
